The Huron Perth Healthcare Alliance announced this week the addition of Dr David Schulz and Dr Mary Feng, who will open practices in Seaforth following the recent retirement of Dr Rick Bains. They join the other ophthalmologist in the area, Dr John Roberts Walker, who is based in Stratford.

“The continued strengthening of needed services in our region is a top priority,” Andrew Williams, chief executive of the hospital group, said in a statement. “Improving access and wait times for our public hospital’s cataract program in Clinton is a big part of that.”

Patients from Huron and Perth counties have traveled out of the region to receive care, added Laurie Roberts, medical staff manager for the hospital alliance.

“By adding a third ophthalmologist to our staff in our department, and specifically in the cataract program, patients in Huron-Perth will be able to get their care locally,” she said. “As the population ages, that’s definitely a service we’re seeing increasing.”

The Huron Perth Healthcare Alliance oversees hospitals in Stratford, St. Marys, Clinton and Seaforth.

Schulz and Feng are both graduates of Western University Medical School in London. Schulz then completed his training in ophthalmology at the Ivey Eye Institute in Western, while Feng’s training included a fellowship in oculoplasty and ocular oncology at the Tennent Institute of Ophthalmology in Glasgow, Scotland.

“I am very pleased to have opened a new clinic in Huron Perth,” said Schulz. “There are many opportunities to grow the ophthalmology program in this area and I look forward to seeing what the future holds.”
