June 24 – The company that bought the former Aldi grocery store near Cressona plans to start work on the site next month and open next year.
Charles Busack, administrator of Eye Consultants of Pennsylvania, Wyomissing, said site renovations will begin July 5 and he expects them to be complete in the spring.
Eye Consultants will relocate its current practice and optical store from Schuylkill Medical Plaza in Pottsville to the building located at 1494 Route 61 in North Manheim Township.
Busack said the new space, which is being renovated by Benchmark Construction Co. of Brownstown, Lancaster County, will be double that of Pottsville, allowing for more services.
“This will allow up to six physicians to see patients at the same time, which is also double what our current office in Pottsville can accommodate,” he said in an email. “It will also house a larger optical store with an expanded selection of frames.”
The site is prepared for the start of work, with fences surrounding the building and barriers erected at the entrances.
Pottsville Medical Building Associates LLC of Wyomissing purchased the building, built in 1995, from Aldi Inc. (Pennsylvania), Center Valley, in October. The store closed in November 2020 and moved to its current location six miles north at 384 Pottsville Saint Clair Highway the same month.
Busack said Eye Consultants will continue to see patients at its Schuylkill Medical Plaza location until the new office is renovated.
The society’s website lists 14 eye doctors working in and around Pottsville. Some of them practice at the Pottsville Surgery Center, located in the Cressona Mall next to the old grocery store, which will close Tuesday. He said officials were looking at “various health care facility options” for patients who came to the center for their surgeries.
Busack added that the company was not interested in purchasing the surgery center facilities.
