With diabetes being a common cause of blindness in 20-75 year olds and high blood sugar leading to diabetic retinopathy, diabetic macular oedema, cataracts and glaucoma, a Bengaluru-based eye care center has launched a “reverse diabetes “.

As part of this initiative, Narayana Nethralaya will set up an exclusive clinic with a team of 15 specialists to treat and treat diabetic eye diseases.

Speaking to the media, K. Bhujang Shetty, Chairman and CEO of Narayana Nethralaya, said that almost 70% of the 1,500 patients seen daily suffer from diabetic eye diseases. “The team will work to help patients find methods to reverse diabetes and raise awareness of the complications diabetes can cause,” he said.

The team will include ophthalmologists, retina specialists, general practitioners and dietitians who will work together to provide comprehensive care to help patients achieve the goal of diabetes reversal and remission.

“Over the past decades of my practice, I have seen the devastation that eye disease can cause. The toll it takes on the families of diabetes patients is unimaginable. Along with the financial burden, these patients suffer emotional trauma and have to compromises on quality of life. Fear of blindness in my patients prompted me to start this reverse diabetes initiative,” he said.
