A LEADING hospital in the North East has invested in its vision of becoming a center of excellence in eye care for the NHS and private patients.

Darlington-based Woodlands Hospital – part of Circle Healthcare – is building on its growing reputation for pioneering treatment by launching the Woodlands Eye Service.

The hospital’s latest development follows the huge success it has had since it began renting the Stryker Mako robot in 2019 – revolutionizing joint replacement surgery for patients in the North East and beyond. of the.

This was followed last year – the hospital’s 20th anniversary – with the introduction of the state-of-the-art Smith & Nephew robot, which specializes in knee and hip replacements.

Mark Bythway, Sales Marketing and Outpatients Manager, said, “The development of the Eye Care Center is another vote of confidence in Woodlands Hospital following our phenomenal success with robotic surgery.

“We have clearly demonstrated that if we develop a quality, niche product, backed by first-class service, people will come from near and far.”

The hospital’s executive director, Debbie Dobbs, has overseen a dramatic expansion since she took over 15 years ago. Woodlands had two clean air theaters at the time, before an outpatient theater was added six years ago.

Now “Theatre 4” has been created in the former radiology department, with investment in clean airflow and a range of state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment. They include an optical coherence tomography (OCT) machine that can visualize eye health in great detail.

The centre’s experts mainly deal with cataract surgery and glaucoma treatment for NHS and private patients.

The hospital has a team of five ophthalmologists – with plans to recruit three more – and two specialist nurses have also been recruited.

“We are looking for continuous development and our ambition is to create a center of excellence that makes Woodlands Hospital the go-to place for eye care. As the service grows and word spreads, there’s every chance we’ll create more jobs,” added Mark.

As part of its expansion program, the hospital recently recruited four international healthcare professionals.

An open day is planned at the hospital in the near future and, in the meantime, staff are keen to hear from anyone who might be interested in using the services.
